We don't use the word covenant much nowadays. It means an agreement and a commitment among those who are building the Church of Jesus Christ. They have made a commitment to the Lord their Bridegroom, first of all, and then a commitment to one another. There you have the two planks of the cross - the vertical and the horizontal. They love the Lord fervently first, and then love one another.
This is what is symbolized in the "breaking of bread" in a local church. We state thereby that we are in fellowship with the Lord and want to die to Self as He did (1 Corinthians 11:26-28). We also state thereby that we are in fellowship with one another as members of His Body (1 Corinthians 10:16, 17). That is why there is one bread, and many of us partaking of it together.
