In Andrew Murray’s book “ Humility”, he quotes from another author who says:
“Let it be known for all eternity that pride can degrade the highest angels into devils, and that humility can raise the worst human beings to the thrones in heaven.
The great purpose of God in raising up a new creation is this: That we will be rooted at all times in the humility of Jesus, and stand in a perpetual war against the pride of the fallen angels. Thus the last trumpet will sound this great truth throughout all eternity, that evil can have no beginning but from pride, and have no end but from humility.
Pride must die in you, or nothing of heaven can live in you. So give yourself up totally to the meek and humble spirit of Jesus. Humility must sow the seed now, or else there will be NO reaping in Heaven.
Don’t look at pride as just a bad habit and at humility as just a decent virtue. Pride is all death, and humility is all life. Pride is all hell, and humility is all heaven. As much as you have of pride in you, you have of the spirit of Satan and his demons in you. And as much as you have of true humility, only so much do you have of the Spirit of Jesus within you.
If you could only see what even a small stirring of pride does to your soul, you would plead with God to tear away this viper from inside of you, even if in the process you have to lose a hand or an eye.
And if you could only see what a divine, transforming power there is in humility, and how it expels the poison of your fleshly nature, and makes room for the Spirit of God to move freely within you, you would eagerly want to be the footstool of the whole world rather than want even the smallest part of what this world has to offer."
And Andrew Murray himself writes:
“Humility is fitting for us as creatures, and as sinners, and as saints. But in most religious teaching, it is our being sinners that has been put forth as the main reason for humility. Some have even gone to the extreme of teaching that our constant sinning keeps us humble. Others have taught that self-condemnation is the secret of humility.
But believers suffer great loss when they are not taught to see that, nothing is more blessed than to be nothing as a created being before God, so that God can be ALL; or where they have not been taught that it is NOT sin that makes us truly humble, but GRACE. The believer who is led to be occupied with God Himself in all His glory as God, Creator and Redeemer, is the one who will take the lowest place before Him.”
