At one point, when Jesus told them that He was going to be crucified, the disciples immediately did what any earthly-minded person would do when a leader leaves his position - they started to argue about who would take over the leadership (Mark 9:31-34). A short time later, Jesus told them again that He was going to be crucified and raised up on the third day (Matthew 20:18-21). Again, the disciples, beginning with James and John, expressed their desire for positions of greatness. They saw Jesus' being glorified as an opportunity for them also to be lifted up in front of everybody. Jesus replied to them that He " did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life…" (v28).
